Another quilter featured in the aforementioned show is French-born Violette Alby. Alby's abstract quilts are full of color and thought, and they're only made out of recycled fabrics and materials.
With the cold weather brewing, taking a quilting class and making something warm and forever is a great idea. Textile Art Center in Brooklyn and Purl Soho in Manhattan host terrific quilting intensives. Purl Soho and Brooklyn General Store also house some of the most amazing new and vintage fabrics. My favorite is hunting Goodwill (Goodwill Hunting)/Salvation Army for old sheets to (wash 3 times) reuse.
